UNI Center for Urban Education (UNI-CUE)

Educational Talent Search (ETS)

  • The Educational Talent Search program provides tutorial services, career exploration, information on postsecondary education, exposer to college campuses, information on student financial assistance, assistance in completing college admissions and financial aid applications, assistance in preparing for college entrance exams, special activities for sixth, seventh and eighth-graders, and workshops for the families of participants. This program serves the middle schools and high schools in the Waterloo Community School District.

Classic Upward Bound (CUB)

  • Classic Upward Bound (CUB) is designed to empower program participants with the academic skills and motivation necessary to be successful in high school and to ultimately complete college. Services available to Upward Bound participants include academic advising and counseling, personal and career counseling, supplemental instruction/ tutoring services, financial aid counseling, skills development workshops, academic instruction, cultural/educational enrichment activities, college admissions assistance, six-week summer campus residential program and bridge program.

Tutoring Center

  • Provides free tutoring services during the academic year to Black Hawk County students in grades K-12 students. Tutors are upper-level undergraduate students from UNI, and community volunteers, who work one-on-one with students to improve reading, English, composition, social sciences, math, and other skills as requested. The UNI-CUE Tutoring Center is specifically designed to provide skill development over the course of several weeks during a semester. Students must register for tutoring each semester. 

ACT Prep

  • Sessions provides tutoring services to high school juniors and seniors preparing to take or retake the ACT. These prep sessions are free to juniors and seniors from any high school in Black Hawk County. Students may enroll in more than one subject and may repeat the sessions until they feel comfortable with taking the ACT.

Hawkeye Community College Van G. Miller Adult Learning Center

High School Level Courses

  • Hawkeye offers high school level courses that may be transferred back to your high school for credit. These independent study courses allow you to schedule and take courses at a pace that is convenient for you.

High school completion program 

  • The High School Completion program (formerly the GED program) offers free courses designed to help you to earn a high school equivalency diploma and become prepared for college and the workplace. Whether you’ve recently left school or have been out of class for years, our program works with students of all levels and ages to advance their education and accomplish their academic and professional goals.

HiSET Testing

  • You and your High School Completion teacher will determine when you are prepared to begin the testing process. This will include CASAS testing, practice testing, official practice testing, and HiSET testing.

Career Pathway and College Transition Services

Students in the English Language Learning Program or the High School Completion Program are eligible to receive one-on-one assistance from the Adult Learning Center’s AEL Career Pathway Specialist, as well as the Transition Specialist as they obtain their high school equivalency diploma or improve their English skills.
